Cheng Jing Steamfish - update, June 2024

Almost a year after my original post on ChengJing Steamfish, the menu has been extensively revised. The signature dish, steamed fish, was temporarily taken off the menu, but happily, has since been reinstated. See original post here:

What’s changed is a more extensive and varied menu with fried dishes, noodles, porridge and chicken.  All dishes are in a single size, for two persons. Having said that, I found the portions to be quite generous, and if you’re ordering several dishes for sharing, a two-person portion can be shared among several people.

The signature steamed Soong Yee fish (Rm38) was as succulent as ever, with impeccably fresh fish in a light sauce, not overly swamped with minced ginger as you will sometimes encounter in this dish.

The selection of steamed seafood extends to steamed fish slices (Rm28) which is a new addition, besides the stalwart steamed lala and steamed prawns from the previous menu.

I didn't have the stomach to try everything new, but one standout was the RM45 Seafood Porridge, good for two or three persons, if you’re not heavy eaters.  The dish is served in a claypot, and is honest-to-goodness boiling and smoking furiously when served, so give it a minute or two to simmer down before going for it.

The porridge is the type with rice in a rich and clear seafood broth, from which prawns, scallops, clams and chunks of fish can be scooped out. The broth is wonderful, it just smacks you with the rich prawn-seafood flavour from the first mouthful.  Give some time for the rice to soak and absorb the rich flavour, and forget those silly ideas about eating less carbohydrate because this is really too good to miss out on.

The seafood is fresh with good portion sizes. Just on its own, this would be a satisfying nutritious dinner for two. Don’t forget the tissues if it’s a warm evening!

New to the menu are the chicken dishes, of which I tried the Fah Thiew Kai (Rm32), which also arrived steaming hot and bubbling away in a claypot. Chicken chunks in a dark sauce with Shaoxing rice wine, this dish deserves a bowl or two of white rice to do it justice, such is the thick, sweet sauce that it’s too rich on its own.  I made the mistake of having this with the Seafood Porridge and the chicken dish rather overwhelms the delicate flavour of the porridge, so plan accordingly.

The variety of dishes deserves a return visit or two to sample everything. As before, the location in a food court with fixed stools and small rectangular tables limits the opportunities for socializing, because ideally, you’d have several people tend to a meal like this.
